How To EVALUATE A Leader

Although it’s often, quite challenging, to pre – determine, whether a specific individual, is the right – fit, for your organization, wouldn’t it be great, if there were some method, and/ or, way, to EVALUATE an actual, and/ or potential leader, in some relevant, realistic manner? After over 4 decades of involvement, in nearly all aspects of leadership, from identifying, qualifying, training, and developing thousands of actual, and/ or potential leaders, to personally serving, as a leader, in various capacities, and types of groups (including purpose, mission, size, success level, etc), I have attempted to consider, some of the key factors and components, needed and necessary. With that in mind, this article will attempt to consider, review, and briefly discuss, using the mnemonic approach, what is involved, and why it’s relevant and significant.1. Empathy; emphasis: One should never enter any position of leader, unless he realizes, leading is not about him, his personal/ political agenda/ positions, or self – interests, but, rather serving and representing the best interests and common good, of those he serves, and the group, he represents. To do so, one must spend far more time, effectively listening, in order to discover, the perceptions, priorities, needs, and desires of stakeholders, and consistently learn from every conversation and experience. When this is done, an individual is capable of proceeding, with the utmost degree of genuine empathy, and placing his emphasis, on relevant, sustainable concepts, and ideas!


2. Vision; views; value; values: How might you, align your vision and focus, with the mission, visions, and heritage of the organization? Will you articulate views, which clearly demonstrate value, to actual and potential constituents, and share the highest values, your group represents?3. Attitude; attention: True leaders proceed, with a genuine, positive, can – do, attitude, and pay the bulk of their attention, on finding the best paths, to follow!4. Listen; learn; leading: It all begins with effective listening, and consistent, relevant learning! You are only leading, when you strive to make a significant difference, and improvement/ change, for the better!5. Unique; useful; urging: What do you bring, to the table, which is unique, and makes you, the right person, to be a leader? Will you focus on useful ideas, and plans, while urging others to get more involved, and committed?6. Aptitude; articulate: Quality leadership does not merely happen, and there is no such thing, as a born – leader! One must commit to, developing a relevant skill – set, in order to possess a well – refined, aptitude! When this is the process, a true leader is ready, willing and able, to articulate, the reasons, others should care and commit!


7. Timely: One must expand the restrictions of his personal, comfort zone, and avoid the trap, of procrastination! A true leader proceeds, with well – considered, timely planning, and actions!8. Excellence; endurance: Real leaders demand the utmost degree of personal excellence, and develop the necessary endurance, to go – on, when pseudo – leaders become overwhelmed!There is no, simplistic, one – size – fits – all, way, of evaluating and considering, the best individuals, to become leaders! Begin with this approach, and attempt to EVALUATE, each potential leaders, probability of making a difference, for the better!
